Solar panel efficiency: what the percentage means, how efficient today's panels are and why efficiency is not the same as power or energy

A solar panel's efficiency is the percentage of the sunlight falling on it that it turns into electricity. It is printed on every datasheet and often used as a selling point, but it answers a narrower question than most people think: how much electricity you get per square metre of panel, not how much you will save. This guide explains the figure using the US Department of Energy and Fraunhofer ISE's Photovoltaics Report, what a normal value is today and how it relates to power and energy.

The essentials in 30 seconds

The conversion efficiency of a solar cell is, in the US Department of Energy's words, the percentage of the solar energy shining on it that is converted into usable electricity. Most of the sunlight is lost: some is reflected, some passes through and some becomes heat. The DOE says industrially produced modules achieve real-world efficiencies of 20% to 22%. Fraunhofer ISE puts the weighted average of commercial crystalline silicon modules at 22.7% in late 2024, from 18.9% to 24.8%. The best monocrystalline lab cell reached 28.1%, but you cannot buy that on a roof. Efficiency tells you how much power you get from a given area: a more efficient panel needs less roof space for the same output. Your bills depend on the energy (kWh) the system produces, which depends on its power (kWp), your roof direction, shading and sunshine.

  • Compare efficiency when roof space is tight.
  • Compare price per kWp and the installer's yearly kWh estimate for savings.
01 / Definition

What is solar panel efficiency?

It is the share of the sunlight reaching a panel that comes out as electricity. A panel with 22% efficiency turns 22% of the solar energy falling on it into electricity under test conditions. The DOE explains how it is measured: the cell is exposed to a constant, standard level of light at a constant cell temperature, and the current and voltage it produces are measured. That is why datasheet figures are comparable between panels, but not identical to what happens on a hot or cloudy day on your roof.

02 / Typical values

How efficient are solar panels today?

Solar panel efficiency today
Figure Value Source
Real-world efficiency of industrially produced modules 20% to 22% US DOE
Weighted average of commercial crystalline silicon modules (Q4 2024) 22.7% (21.6% a year earlier) Fraunhofer ISE
Range among commercial crystalline silicon modules (Q4 2024) 18.9% to 24.8% Fraunhofer ISE
Record lab cell, monocrystalline silicon 28.1% Fraunhofer ISE

Efficiency has been rising: Fraunhofer ISE says commercial monocrystalline modules went from about 17% to just under 25% over the past decade, and n-type TOPCon and heterojunction cells are replacing older designs. Polycrystalline panels have in practice left the market; see monocrystalline vs polycrystalline solar panels.

03 / What is good?

What is a good efficiency for a solar panel?

There is no official threshold for a "good" panel. A useful yardstick is where a datasheet figure sits in the current market: around 22.7% is average for commercial silicon modules, and close to 25% is at the top of what is shipped. A slightly lower figure is not a defect: it means a bigger panel for the same power. Look at it alongside the power (W), warranty and yearly degradation.

04 / Why most light is lost

What limits solar panel efficiency?

Factors that limit efficiency (US DOE)
Factor What happens
Wavelength Some photons are reflected or pass through; some absorbed energy becomes heat instead of electricity
Recombination Electrons and holes cancel out, so their current is lost
Temperature Cells work best when cool; heat lowers the voltage much more than it raises the current
Reflection Untreated silicon reflects more than 30% of light; anti-reflection coatings and textured surfaces reduce it, which is why efficient cells look dark blue or black
05 / Efficiency, power, energy

Efficiency vs power vs energy

  1. 01

    Efficiency (%)

How much of the sunlight on a given area becomes electricity. Higher efficiency means fewer cells for the same output, the DOE notes, so less roof area.

  2. 02

    Power (W or kWp)

The panel's or system's rated output under test conditions. A typical UK home system is about 4.5 kWp, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

  3. 03

    Energy (kWh)

What the system actually produces over a year, and what saves you money. It depends on power, sunshine, roof direction and shading. Panels work best on a south-facing roof with no shade, and still work on cloudy days.

06 / In the UK

Are solar panels efficient in the UK?

Yes, in the sense that matters: the Energy Saving Trust says solar cells do not need direct sunlight and can work on cloudy days, although stronger sunshine generates more electricity, and areas further south get more direct sunlight. The efficiency printed on a panel is the same wherever it is installed; what changes from Aberdeen to Cornwall is the energy it produces. See solar panel savings for payback by location.

07 / Over time

Does efficiency drop over time?

A little. The DOE says crystalline silicon modules last 25 years or more, and the lifespan guide explains degradation of under 1% a year. In the UK, the Energy Saving Trust says rain cleans panels tilted at 15 degrees or more; keeping trees trimmed to reduce shading matters more than cleaning.

FAQ

Solar panel efficiency: frequently asked questions

How efficient are solar panels?

Commercial silicon modules averaged 22.7% in late 2024 (Fraunhofer ISE); the DOE gives 20% to 22% for real-world modules.

What is a good efficiency for a solar panel?

There is no official threshold. Around 22.7% is average for commercial modules and close to 25% is at the top of the market.

What is the most efficient solar panel?

Commercial crystalline silicon modules reached up to 24.8% in late 2024. The 28.1% record is for a laboratory cell, not a panel you can buy.

Why are solar panels only about 20% efficient?

Much of the sunlight is reflected, passes through or becomes heat, and some charge carriers recombine before they become current.

Does a more efficient panel save more money?

Not by itself. Savings depend on the energy (kWh) your system produces and uses. A more efficient panel mainly needs less roof space for the same power.

Do solar panels work in winter or on cloudy days?

Yes. They do not need direct sunlight, but produce less when the light is weaker.
