How to clean a fan: unplug or switch off, vacuum the grille, wash the grille and blade with mild soap, ceiling fan blades with a pillowcase, and what to avoid

A fan pulls air, and with it dust, pet hair and, in a kitchen, grease, through its grille and across its blades. A dusty fan moves less air and blows some of that dust back into the room. Cleaning it is quick, but the method depends on the fan: a desk or pedestal fan comes apart, a ceiling fan is cleaned in place. This guide follows the use and care guides of Vornado, a fan manufacturer, and Hunter, a ceiling fan manufacturer.

Practical guide · Updated 2 November 2026

The essentials in 30 seconds

Unplug a desk, floor or pedestal fan before removing the grille or blade; switch a ceiling fan off and let its light cool. For a quick clean, vacuum the grille and air inlets with the brush attachment. For a deeper clean, remove the front grille as your manual shows (Vornado models need a screwdriver), dust or wash it with mild dishwashing soap, and wipe the blade with a damp cloth; in a kitchen, mild soap or a common household cleaner may be needed. Do not use solvents, and do not put the grille or blade in the dishwasher: the heat can distort the plastic. On a ceiling fan, slide a large pillowcase over each blade and pull it back gently to trap the dust, cleaning both sides with light pressure, and spray any cleaner onto the cloth, never onto the fan.

  • Hunter: dust ceiling fans every 1 to 3 months and deep clean every 3 to 6 months.
  • Kitchens, pets and allergies mean cleaning more often.
  • A damaged fan: stop using it, unplug it and contact the manufacturer.
01 / Step by step

How to clean a desk or pedestal fan

  1. 01

    Unplug it

Power off and unplug before touching the grille.

  2. 02

    Vacuum first

Brush attachment of your household vacuum over the grille and air inlets.

  3. 03

    Remove the grille

Follow your manual; Vornado models use clips, tabs or screws and a flat screwdriver (cover its tip with a soft cloth to avoid scratches).

  4. 04

    Wash the grille

Dust it or wash it with mild dishwashing soap; not in the dishwasher.

  5. 05

    Remove and wipe the blade

If your manual allows it, unscrew the blade cap as shown and pull the blade off; wipe it with a damp cloth.

  6. 06

    Dry everything

    Let parts dry before reassembling.

  7. 07

    Reassemble

Align the blade with the flat side of the shaft and push it fully on; never use a hammer. Refit the grille with every clip engaged.

02 / Fan types

Desk, pedestal and ceiling fans

How to clean each type of fan (Vornado and Hunter)
Fan Method Avoid
Desk, floor or pedestal fan (Vornado) Unplug; vacuum grille; remove grille, wash with mild dishwashing soap; wipe blade with a damp cloth, mild soap or household cleaner in kitchens Solvents; dishwasher; hammering the blade back on
Ceiling fan blades (Hunter) Pillowcase or microfibre cloth, both sides, light pressure; slightly damp microfibre cloth with a mild solution for grease, then dry Spraying cleaner on the fan; heavy pressure, which can break or unbalance blades; abrasive cleaners, bleach
Ceiling fan body and light (Hunter) Microfibre cloth, extendable duster or compressed air; light glass removed and washed in warm soapy water, dried fully Abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads on the glass
03 / Ceiling fans

How to clean ceiling fan blades

Switch the fan off and make sure the light is not hot. Cover furniture underneath with an old sheet. Slide a large pillowcase, longer than the blade, over each blade and pull it gently towards you, wiping the top and bottom. Hunter warns that too much pressure can break the blades or put them out of balance. For grease or a thick layer of dust, use a slightly damp pillowcase, or wipe each blade with a microfibre cloth dampened with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap; for stubborn residue, a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Always apply the solution to the cloth, then dry the blades with a dry microfibre cloth. Shake the pillowcase out outdoors before washing it. Hunter also suggests wiping the remote with 70 % isopropyl alcohol on a cotton cloth, with the batteries removed.

04 / How often

When to clean a fan

Hunter recommends dusting ceiling fans every 1 to 3 months and a deep clean every 3 to 6 months, more often in kitchens, homes with pets or with allergy sufferers, where grease, pet hair and dust build up faster. Moving blades and static electricity attract dust, and kitchen grease makes it stick. For desk and pedestal fans, vacuum the grille whenever you see dust on it, and wash the grille and blade as your manual describes.

05 / Avoid

What not to do when cleaning a fan

  • Removing the grille or blade without unplugging the fan.
  • Solvents on the blade (Vornado), and abrasive cleaners, bleach or harsh chemicals on ceiling fan blades (Hunter).
  • The dishwasher for plastic grilles and blades: heat distorts them.
  • Spraying cleaner directly on a ceiling fan, where moisture can reach the motor housing or light kit.
  • Pressing hard on ceiling fan blades.
  • Hammering a blade back onto the shaft, which can damage the bearings.
