How to clean blinds: dusting, vacuuming, spot cleaning fabric, wood and vinyl, and what never to use

Blinds collect dust on every slat, vane and pleat, and a wrong move with a wet cloth can leave a fabric blind creased or stained for good. The good news is that most blinds need only regular dusting. This guide follows the care advice of Hunter Douglas, a window covering manufacturer, for venetian, vertical, roller, roman and wooden blinds while they stay on the window.

The essentials in 30 seconds

Dust regularly with a soft cloth, a feather duster or a microfibre duster. Vacuum gently with the brush attachment, light pressure and vertical strokes. For dust in hard-to-reach places, use compressed air or a hair dryer set to cool, never warm. On fabric, spot clean only if your product allows it: blot with a white cloth dampened in lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, non-abrasive detergent, and never rub. Keep wooden blinds dry: dust them, with no excess moisture or chemical cleaners. Vinyl takes mild soap and water, but no ammonia-based cleaners.

  • Check the care instructions that came with your blind: some fabrics must not be spot cleaned at all.
  • No magnetic dusting mitts on room-darkening fabrics.
  • Delicate or very dirty fabric blinds: professional cleaning.
01 / Step by step

How to clean blinds without removing them

  1. 01

    Check the care label

Some fabrics must not be spot cleaned, vacuumed with a brush or steamed.

  2. 02

    Dust

Soft cloth, feather duster or microfibre duster.

  3. 03

    Vacuum

Brush attachment, light pressure, vertical strokes where possible.

  4. 04

    Blow out hard-to-reach dust

Compressed air or a hair dryer on cool, held about 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) away, blowing gently across the surface.

  5. 05

    Spot clean marks, if allowed

White cloth or sponge with lukewarm water, a little mild detergent if needed, blotting rather than rubbing.

  6. 06

    Let it dry

    Leave fabric to air dry.

02 / Types

Venetian, vertical, roller, roman and wooden blinds

How to clean each type of blind
Blind How to clean it Avoid
Venetian, metal or vinyl Dust or vacuum with the brush attachment; vinyl with mild soap and water Ammonia-based cleaners on vinyl
Wooden venetian Soft cloth or feather duster; a quality wood conditioner now and then, if the maker recommends it Excess moisture, chemical cleaners
Vertical fabric Vacuum with light pressure and vertical strokes; blot marks if allowed Rubbing the fabric
Fabric roller Dust or vacuum with the brush; blot marks with lukewarm water and mild detergent if allowed Magnetic mitts on room-darkening fabric
Roman and pleated Duster, cool hair dryer or compressed air between folds Inserting tools between layers
Fabric tapes on venetians Polyester tapes: cool distilled water on a white cloth Water on shiny tapes (fabric wipes instead)
03 / Fabric

Cleaning fabric, cloth and material blinds

Fabric blinds are where most damage happens. Hunter Douglas says some products may be spot cleaned with a clean white cloth or sponge dampened with lukewarm water, adding a mild, non-abrasive detergent if needed, and gently blotting. Rubbing can cause permanent damage or creasing. Some fabrics must not be spot cleaned at all, and some fabric-covered headrails need cool distilled water instead of tap water, so the care instructions for your blind come first. For dust trapped between sheer layers, blow gently with a cool hair dryer or compressed air, and never push sticks or brushes into the fabric.

04 / Deep cleaning

When to call a professional blind cleaner

For a deep clean of soft fabric blinds, Hunter Douglas mentions ultrasonic cleaning and injection/extraction cleaning (water and suction while the blind stays installed), done by specialists. These methods are not suitable for every fabric, nor for fabric-covered headrails, valances or rails. Choose a cleaner who knows your type of blind and follows the manufacturer's recommendations.

05 / Avoid

What not to use to clean blinds

  • Rubbing fabric blinds: blot instead.
  • Warm or hot air, which can warp delicate materials.
  • Magnetic dusting mitts on room-darkening fabrics.
  • Ammonia-based cleaners on vinyl, and excess water or chemical cleaners on wood.
  • Water on shiny fabric tapes, which can leave permanent stains.
  • Steam, unless your blind's instructions recommend it.
