The essentials in 30 seconds
A washer-dryer is a washing machine that also dries the laundry in the same drum with hot air and drum rotation. Before comparing brands, decide between one combined machine and a washing machine plus a separate dryer. Then compare models on their energy label, which in the EU shows two A–G classes: one for the complete wash and dry cycle (left) and one for the wash cycle only (right), each with its energy per 100 cycles, rated capacity, water per cycle and cycle duration, plus the spin-drying class and noise.
- Check both capacities: the full wash-and-dry cycle can take a different load from washing alone.
- Compare like with like: wash-and-dry figures with wash-and-dry figures.
- The label's QR code and the product information sheet give the official data.
Washer-dryer vs washing machine and dryer
| Option | What it is | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Washer-dryer (combo) | One machine that washes and dries in the same drum | Wash-and-dry capacity, full cycle duration and class, space saved |
| Washing machine + separate dryer | Two appliances, side by side or stacked where the manufacturer allows it | Each machine's own label and capacity; the dryer type (vented, condenser or heat pump) |
A combined machine saves space. Two machines let you wash one load while another dries, and the dryer has its own label and technology. If you choose a separate dryer, read what a heat pump tumble dryer is.
The two capacities of a washer-dryer
EU rules define separate figures for a washer-dryer, each declared in steps of 0.5 kg of dry laundry:
- Rated capacity for the complete cycle: the maximum load that can be washed and dried in one go.
- Rated washing capacity: the maximum load for the wash cycle alone.
- Rated drying capacity: the maximum load for the drying cycle.
The figures can differ, so if you want to wash and dry without splitting the load, look at the complete-cycle capacity on the label, not just the washing capacity.
How to read a washer-dryer energy label
| Item | Left side | Right side |
|---|---|---|
| Energy class (A to G) | Complete wash and dry cycle | Wash cycle |
| Weighted energy per 100 cycles (kWh) | Complete cycle | Wash cycle |
| Rated capacity (kg) | Complete cycle | Wash cycle |
| Weighted water per cycle (litres) | Complete cycle | Wash cycle |
| Cycle duration at rated capacity | Complete cycle | Wash cycle |
| Spin-drying class and noise class with dB(A) | Spin phase of the eco 40-60 programme |
The label also carries a QR code, the supplier's name or trademark and the model identifier. Retailers must show the label at the point of sale and, online, the label and the product information sheet. Any advert for a specific model must state its energy class and the range of classes on the label.
How to choose the best washing machine with dryer
-
01
Measure the space
Width, depth, height and door opening, plus room for hoses.
-
02
Choose combo or two machines
Based on space and how often you dry.
-
03
Check the complete-cycle capacity
It should match the load you want to wash and dry at once.
-
04
Compare the complete-cycle class
And the kWh per 100 cycles if you dry often.
-
05
Compare water and duration
Both are on the label, for each cycle.
-
06
Look at the noise class
Useful in open-plan homes or flats.
-
07
Read the product information sheet
Use the model identifier or QR code.
-
08
Check repair information
EU ecodesign rules include requirements on spare parts availability and access to repair and maintenance information.
The eco 40-60 programme and the wash and dry cycle
EU ecodesign rules require washing machines and washer-dryers to offer an eco 40-60 programme, set as the default where possible, and for washer-dryers they also include requirements on the wash and dry cycle. The energy and water figures on the label are measured on these cycles, so they are the fairest way to compare models. Manufacturers cannot call programmes "normal", "daily", "regular" or "standard".
Washing machine with dryer: frequently asked questions
What is the best washing machine with dryer?
The one whose complete-cycle capacity, energy class, water use, duration and noise fit your home. Compare those figures on the energy label rather than relying on brand rankings.
Is a washer-dryer better than a washing machine and a separate dryer?
A washer-dryer saves space. Two machines let you wash and dry at the same time and each has its own label. It depends on your space and how much you dry.
Why does a washer-dryer label have two energy classes?
Because it rates the complete wash and dry cycle and the wash cycle separately, each on its own A to G scale.
Can a washer-dryer dry a full wash load?
Not always. Check the rated capacity for the complete cycle, which can be different from the washing capacity.
Where can I find official data on a washer-dryer?
On its energy label and product information sheet, which retailers must provide, including online.
