Pressure washer surface cleaner: how to choose an attachment that matches your pressure washer's PSI and GPM, its connection and your surface

A surface cleaner turns a pressure washer into a small floor scrubber for driveways, patios and sidewalks: two spinning nozzles under a round hood clean a wide strip without the stripes a single wand leaves. But not every surface cleaner works with every pressure washer. This guide explains how to check compatibility using the ratings manufacturers publish, and the use rules in the instructions.

The essentials in 30 seconds

Before buying a pressure washer surface cleaner, check four things against your pressure washer's own ratings: the pressure range in PSI (many have a recommended minimum as well as a maximum), the flow in GPM (some set a minimum and a maximum), the type of machine it is designed for (gas or electric) and the connection (often a 1/4" quick connect). Most home surface cleaners are for cold water only: the manuals we read set 140 °F (60 °C) as the maximum. Then choose the width (for example 15" or 16.5") and features such as wheels and a skirt that reduces splash-back.

  • Look for your pressure washer model in the manufacturer's compatibility list when there is one.
  • Make sure the quick connect clicks and is seated before you start.
  • Keep moving: never stay on one spot for more than 2 seconds.

How to know if a surface cleaner fits your pressure washer

What to check on the surface cleaner's specifications
Rating What it means Manufacturer examples
Pressure (PSI) Your pressure washer must fall within the range Simpson 80625: recommended minimum 2,000 to maximum 4,000 PSI; Kärcher 15" metal: 2,600 to 4,000 PSI; Kärcher 15" home: up to 3,200 PSI; Ryobi RY31SC15: up to 3,400 PSI
Flow (GPM) Your machine's flow must suit the attachment Simpson 80625: minimum 2.5 to maximum 4.0 GPM; Kärcher 15" metal: up to 4.0 GPM; Ryobi RY31SC15: up to 2.5 GPM
Machine type Designed for gas or electric pressure washers Kärcher 15" metal and Ryobi RY31SC15: gas; Kärcher 15" home: gas, with a quick connect for many electric models
Connection How it attaches to the wand 1/4" quick connect (Simpson 80625, Kärcher 15" metal); M22 quick connect in the Kärcher 15" home manual
Water temperature Hot water pressure washers may not be suitable Cold water only; 140 °F (60 °C) maximum in Simpson and Kärcher instructions
Compatible models List of pressure washers the maker has matched Kärcher publishes a list of compatible G-series models for each surface cleaner

Read both ends of the range: some surface cleaners give a recommended minimum pressure and flow as well as a maximum. If your pressure washer falls outside the range the manufacturer gives, choose another model.

02 / Size and build

Width, wheels and materials

  • Cleaning width: the examples we checked are 15" (Kärcher, Ryobi) and 16.5" (Simpson). A wider deck covers more ground per pass.
  • Two rotating nozzles at a fixed height are what avoid the stripes of a single wand.
  • Wheels make it easier to move and, on the Kärcher metal model, keep the base at a consistent height.
  • Skirt or shroud: a vinyl skirt or steel shroud keeps the spray contained and reduces splash-back.
  • Materials: steel decks and stainless steel nozzles are offered for corrosion resistance on some models.
  • Extension lances are included with some models to adjust the length.

Where you can use a surface cleaner

Manufacturers list driveways, patios, sidewalks and decks as typical uses. Some, like Kärcher's 15" home model, can also be used on vertical surfaces such as brick walls, stucco and siding, holding the trigger gun with both hands. Kärcher's instructions also say:

  • Test first in an inconspicuous area.
  • Do not use it on windows.
  • It is not for scouring or scrubbing.
  • Do not run over freestanding corners or raised obstacles: hitting one damages the unit, and if it starts to vibrate, stop immediately.
04 / Use

How to use a pressure washer surface cleaner

  1. 01

    Check the connection

Insert it into the quick connect until it clicks, then pull to check it is seated.

  2. 02

    Start the pressure washer

Connect the hose and start it as its manual describes.

  3. 03

    Put it on the surface

    Only then pull the trigger.

  4. 04

    Walk slowly

Move forward at a steady pace behind the deck.

  5. 05

    Keep moving

Never stay on the same area for more than 2 seconds.

  6. 06

    Watch for stripes

If striping or swirling appears, slow down; if it continues, the skirt bristles may be worn.

  7. 07

    Finish safely

Turn off, release the residual pressure with the trigger and engage the trigger lock.

05 / Maintenance

Clogged nozzles

Kärcher explains that a clogged or dirty nozzle causes a pulsing sensation. To clean it: turn off the pressure washer and the water, release the pressure, disconnect the surface cleaner, remove the nozzle with a wrench, clear it with a straightened paper clip and flush it backwards with a garden hose before refitting it aligned and tight.

FAQ

Pressure washer surface cleaners: frequently asked questions

Will any surface cleaner work with my pressure washer?

No. Check the PSI range, the GPM limits, whether it is designed for gas or electric machines and the connection, and look for your model in the compatibility list.

What PSI do I need for a surface cleaner?

It depends on the attachment. Some have a recommended minimum, such as 2,000 PSI for the Simpson 80625, and all have a maximum.

Can I use a surface cleaner with an electric pressure washer?

Some models are designed for gas machines only. Kärcher's 15" home model has a quick connect for many electric pressure washers. Check the specifications.

Can I use hot water with a surface cleaner?

The manuals we read limit the water to 140 °F (60 °C) and describe them as cold water accessories.

Why does my surface cleaner leave stripes?

You may be moving too fast. If slowing down does not help, the skirt bristles may be worn.

Can I clean walls with a surface cleaner?

Some models can be used on brick, stucco and siding. Test in a hidden area first, and never use one on windows.
