The essentials in 30 seconds
Remove grit first: sweep, dust mop or vacuum on the hard floor setting, never with a beater bar or rotating brush, which Congoleum and MSI say can damage the surface. Wipe spills immediately with a clean white cloth. For regular cleaning use a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner (Shaw, MSI) or a non-detergent resilient floor cleaner (Congoleum), and dry the floor: do not leave puddles or excess water. MSI asks you to apply the cleaner to the cloth, not to the floor. Never use a steam mop: Congoleum warns steam can permanently damage the floor. Avoid ammonia, bleach as a routine cleaner, vinegar-based products, abrasive cleaners, steel wool, wax, polish, oil soap and "mop and polish" products, which damage the surface or leave a dull, dirt-attracting film.
- Check your floor's own care guide: it decides what voids the warranty.
- Felt pads under furniture and no rubber-backed mats, which can discolour vinyl.
- Blinds or curtains in strong sun to limit fading.

Choosing a vinyl floor cleaner
The safest vinyl floor cleaner is a mild, pH-neutral cleaner made for vinyl or resilient floors. MSI explains why: detergent cleaners leave a residue and, over time, a cloudy film. Congoleum also warns that one-step "mop and polish" products, dishwashing liquids and oil-based cleaners leave a residue that attracts dirt and dulls the finish, and that cleaners with abrasives or solvents can damage the floor permanently. Shaw adds vinegar-based and ammonia-based products to the list. Because each manufacturer's warranty can depend on following its care guide, check the guide for your floor before buying a cleaner. New floors need time: Congoleum says to avoid washing for at least three days after installation, and MSI five days for its glued floors.
Cleaning vinyl plank flooring
Luxury vinyl planks are cleaned like other vinyl, but MSI insists on not pouring water or liquid on the floor and not using an excessively wet mop, and on drying spills immediately. Shaw recommends weekly cleaning to stop dirt building up, more often in high-traffic areas, and walk-off mats at entrances, choosing mats without latex or rubber backings, which can discolour the floor. Use felt protectors and wide furniture bases, and never slide heavy furniture across the planks.
Removing marks from vinyl
Wipe spills before they dry. For spots a cleaner cannot remove, Shaw suggests isopropyl alcohol on a clean white cloth. Congoleum's sheet vinyl guide gives remedies in order, always rinsing with clean water afterwards: its no-rinse cleaner first for food, juice, urine and similar stains, then a 10 to 1 dilution of water and liquid bleach, then isopropyl alcohol; for dried paint, nail polish or varnish, peel off what you can and rub lightly with mineral spirits; for gum, wax or tar, lift the excess with a dull knife first. Check that your own floor's guide allows the product: MSI, for example, says not to use bleach or solvents on its floors.
What not to use on vinyl floors
- Steam mops and excessively wet mops or standing water.
- Vacuum beater bars, rotating brushes, buffers and scrubbers.
- Ammonia, vinegar-based products and harsh chemicals.
- Abrasive cleaners, scouring powder and steel wool.
- Wax, polish, oil soap and "mop and polish" products.
- Rubber-backed mats, and heavy furniture slid across the floor.

Vinyl lifting, bubbling or gapping?
That is usually moisture or installation, not dirt: stop wet cleaning and ask the installer or the manufacturer to check it.
