The essentials in 30 seconds
Clean fireplace glass only when the fireplace is off and completely cool; on a gas fireplace, Regency also says to turn off a standing pilot light. Use a fireplace glass cleaner (or a non-ammonia cleaner your manufacturer approves) with soft microfibre cloths, and clean both sides. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners such as window cleaner or oven cleaner, abrasive cleansers or paper towel: Regency warns that ordinary glass cleaners can leave residues that cause noxious smells or permanent damage when the fire is relit. On a gas fireplace, the glass usually has to be removed following the owner's manual and laid on a soft surface. On a wood fireplace, Regency's trick is damp newspaper dipped in the ash, rubbed in circles.
- Napoleon suggests cleaning gas fireplace glass once or twice a year, or when you see build-up.
- Napoleon also mentions warm water and white vinegar for black residue.
- A daily quick wipe stops creosote baking onto wood fireplace glass.
Why gas fireplace glass goes cloudy
Napoleon explains two causes of the hazy, grey-white film:
- New fireplaces: during the first hours of use there is a period of off-gassing; manufacturing residues mix with combustion products and settle on the glass as condensation when the fireplace cools.
- Older fireplaces: minerals in the fuel or in the outside air drawn in for venting, such as calcium and sulfur, are not combustible and build up on the glass.
On a wood fireplace, the brown or black film is soot and creosote. Regency notes that glass that gets dirty fast can mean the wood is too wet or the fire is not burning efficiently.
How to clean gas fireplace glass
Regency's five steps, combined with Napoleon's advice:
-
01
Off and cool
Turn off the fireplace, including a standing pilot light, and let it cool completely.
-
02
Open or remove
Follow your manual. If the glass is hinged, leave it on the hinges; otherwise remove it and set it on a soft, stable surface such as a towel.
-
03
Apply the cleaner
Spread fireplace glass cleaner across the surface, following the product's instructions.
-
04
Rub
Work it in with a microfibre cloth. Napoleon suggests wiping each side in opposite directions, so you can tell which side any streaks are on.
-
05
Buff
Wipe off the film and buff with a second, clean microfibre cloth.
-
06
Refit
Put the glass back exactly as the manual describes before using the fireplace.
How to clean wood fireplace or stove glass
Regency's method uses no special products:
-
01
Cool
Wait until the fireplace and the ash are cold.
-
02
Newspaper
Crumple some newspaper and lightly wet part of it.
-
03
Ash
Dip the damp newspaper into the ash bed.
-
04
Rub
Rub the ash onto the glass in a circular motion.
-
05
Wipe
Remove the film with dry newspaper or a soft microfibre cloth.
For heavier build-up, Regency's wood fireplace guide recommends a fireplace glass cleaner and a soft cloth on both sides, and a quick clean every day so creosote does not harden.
Fireplace glass cleaner: what to use and avoid
| Product | Use? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fireplace glass cleaner | Yes | Made for the job; follow the label (Regency, Napoleon) |
| Non-ammonia glass cleaner approved by your manufacturer | If the manual allows it | Regency accepts approved non-ammonia cleaners |
| Warm water and white vinegar | For black residue on gas fireplace glass | Napoleon's suggestion; rinse and dry |
| Damp newspaper and wood ash | Wood fireplaces | Regency's method |
| Ammonia-based window cleaner, oven cleaner | No | Napoleon advises against them; residues can cause smells or damage |
| Abrasive cleansers (scouring powder) | No | Napoleon advises against them |

If the white film will not come off, ask your fireplace dealer or a service technician rather than scraping it.
