The essentials in 30 seconds
Keep the sill track free of dirt and debris so water can flow freely to the outside, and keep every weep hole unobstructed, as ProVia instructs. Marvin's seasonal checklist includes cleaning sand, dirt and dust from sills, tracks and hinges. ProVia explains that water in the sill track is not a problem in itself: the window is designed to capture it and drain it outside. It only becomes a problem if it overflows onto the interior sill or wall, and then the first thing to check is debris blocking the drainage holes. Wash vinyl frames and weatherstrip with mild soap and water, rinse and wipe dry. Never use paint thinner, lacquer thinner, petrol, kerosene or abrasive cleaners.
- Keep solvents off the weatherstrip: Marvin warns they damage it.
- Tighten loose hardware screws and use a dry lubricant on window gears (Marvin).
- Dry any wet area around a window immediately.
How to clean window tracks
-
01
Open the window or sliding door
So the whole sill track is exposed.
-
02
Remove dirt and debris
Clear sand, dust, leaves and insects out of the sill track and the corners.
-
03
Check the weep holes
Make sure the drainage holes are not blocked by debris.
-
04
Wash the track and frame
On vinyl, mild soap and water; rinse with water.
-
05
Clean the weatherstrip
Mild soap and water, rinse and wipe dry; keep it free of grit so it seals.
-
06
Dry
Wipe everything dry; dry any wet area around the window straight away.
-
07
Check the hardware
Tighten loose screws; lightly oil or lubricate moving parts as your manufacturer specifies.
Why weep holes matter
ProVia's instructions point out that several window styles let water into the sill area on purpose: the sill is designed to capture rain before it reaches the home and drain it outside through weep holes. Water in the track is therefore normal. If it overflows onto the interior sill or into the wall, check that no debris is blocking the drainage holes. Keeping the sill track clean and the weep holes clear is the whole point of cleaning window tracks.
What to use on tracks, frames and weatherstrip
| Part | Use | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl frame and track | Mild soap and water; vinyl siding cleaner for heavy dirt (test first: some cleaners can mar vinyl) | Abrasive cleaners, which scratch vinyl |
| Weatherstrip | Mild soap and water, rinse, wipe dry; ProVia suggests a light coat of furniture wax, excess wiped off | Solvents, which can damage weatherstrip (Marvin) |
| Hardware | Nonabrasive automotive or furniture wax on brass; tighten screws; light oil, excess wiped off (ProVia) | Harsh chemicals |
| Window gears (casements) | Dry lubricant (Marvin) | Products your manufacturer does not list |
| All surfaces | Follow the window maker's care guide | Paint thinner, lacquer thinner, petrol, kerosene, harsh chemicals |
Water, condensation and wet sills
ProVia adds three moisture rules: find the source of any moisture around windows and stop it, dry wet areas immediately (a dehumidifier, fan or warm air helps) and keep indoor humidity moderate. Condensation on the glass is often the result of high indoor humidity, not a faulty window: see our guide to condensation on windows.
What not to do when cleaning window tracks
- Leaving debris in the sill track or weep holes.
- Paint thinner, lacquer thinner, petrol, kerosene or other harsh chemicals.
- Abrasive cleaners on vinyl.
- Solvents on the weatherstrip.
- Ignoring water that overflows onto the interior sill or wall.
How to clean window tracks: frequently asked questions
What is the best way to clean window tracks?
Remove dirt and debris from the sill track, check that the weep holes are clear, wash with mild soap and water, rinse and wipe dry.
Is water in my window track a problem?
Not by itself. Many windows are designed to collect water in the sill and drain it outside. It is a problem if it overflows inside.
What are weep holes in windows?
Small drainage holes that let water collected in the sill track flow outside. Keep them free of debris.
What cleaner can I use on vinyl window tracks?
Mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals such as thinners, petrol or kerosene.
How do I clean window weatherstrip?
Wash it with mild soap and water, rinse and wipe dry. Keep solvents away from it.
Should I lubricate window tracks?
Follow your window maker's guide. Marvin recommends a dry lubricant on window gears; ProVia says to lightly oil hardware and wipe off the excess.
