How to clean a grill: gas off and cool, grates, flavouriser bars, burner tubes, cookbox and grease trays, and what never to use

Grease and burnt food are what make a grill hard to clean, and they are also what causes flare-ups, uneven heat and corrosion. A thorough clean does not need harsh chemicals: a brush, a plastic scraper, warm soapy water and the right order of work. This guide follows Weber's step-by-step instructions for gas grills, from the lid to the grease tray, including what manufacturers say never to use.

Practical guide · Updated 2 November 2026

The essentials in 30 seconds

Wait until the grill is cool and disconnect the gas supply, following your owner's manual. Work from the top down: lid, side tables and stand with warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth. Brush the grates on both sides, spray a grate cleaner, leave it 30 seconds, scrub with the abrasive side of a sponge and rinse. Scrape the flavouriser bars with a plastic scraper and lift them out. Brush the burner tubes from side to side, never along their length, so debris is not pushed into the burner ports. Scrape the cookbox, then remove and wipe the drip tray and bottom tray by hand. Let everything dry completely, reassemble and preheat on high for 10 to 15 minutes before cooking.

  • No hose or pressure washer: water can damage the ignition.
  • No overnight soaking, no dishwasher for grates, bars or trays.
  • No oven cleaner, acid cleaners, mineral spirits or abrasive pads.
01 / Step by step

How to clean a gas grill

  1. 01

Cool down and disconnect the gas

Check your owner's manual for how to disconnect it safely.

  2. 02

    Clean the outside

Warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth on the lid, side tables, shelves and stand; dry with a clean cloth. Stainless steel: wipe along the grain.

  3. 03

    Clean the grates

Brush between the bars on both sides; spray grate cleaner, wait 30 seconds, scrub with the abrasive side of a sponge, rinse and leave to dry.

  4. 04

    Clean the flavouriser bars

Scrape grease off with a plastic scraper, brush the rest with a stainless steel bristle grill brush, and lift them out.

  5. 05

    Clean the burner tubes

With a clean, dry grill brush, work across each tube from side to side, one at a time. Never along the length.

  6. 06

    Clean the cookbox

Leave the tubes in place; scrape grease and debris with a plastic scraper, apply grate cleaner as its label says and wipe with a sponge.

  7. 07

    Clean the trays

Remove the drip tray and bottom tray, wipe away grease, brush stubborn bits; wash by hand.

  8. 08

    Dry and reassemble

Drip tray, then bars, then grates, once everything is completely dry.

  9. 09

    Burn off

Preheat on high for 10 to 15 minutes before the next cook.

02 / Parts

What to use on each part of a grill

Gas grill parts and how to clean them (Weber)
Part How to clean it Avoid
Lid, side tables, stand Warm soapy water, microfibre cloth, dry; stainless steel along the grain Abrasive stainless steel polishes, abrasive pads
Cooking grates Grill brush, grate cleaner, abrasive side of a sponge, rinse Overnight soaking, dishwasher
Flavouriser bars Plastic scraper, then a stainless steel bristle brush Dishwasher
Burner tubes Clean, dry grill brush, side to side Brushing along the tube; substances in the ports
Cookbox Plastic scraper, grate cleaner per label, sponge Oven cleaner, acid cleaners, mineral spirits, xylene
Drip tray and bottom tray Sponge, brush for stubborn grease, by hand Dishwasher

Weber notes that used grates never look brand new again: some darkening and staining is normal.

03 / Why

Why burner tubes and grease trays matter

Grease, dirt and moisture on the burner tubes can cause scaling that blocks the burner ports and spoils the heat. That is why Weber insists on brushing across the tubes: brushing along them pushes debris into the ports. Keeping the flavouriser bars clear of grease protects them from corrosion and helps reduce flare-ups.

04 / Avoid

What never to use on a grill

  • A hose or pressure washer, even on the outside: water can damage electronic parts such as the ignition.
  • Soaking parts overnight, which can damage or corrode some materials.
  • The dishwasher for grates, flavouriser bars and trays (Weber: hand wash with soap and warm water).
  • Oven cleaner, acid cleaners, mineral spirits, xylene, abrasive cleansers and pads, and abrasive stainless steel polishes.
  • Baking soda or other substances in the burner ports.
FAQ

How to clean a grill: frequently asked questions

What is the best way to clean a gas grill?

Let it cool and disconnect the gas, then clean from the top down: outside, grates, bars, burner tubes, cookbox and trays. Dry, reassemble and burn off for 10 to 15 minutes.

Can I pressure wash my grill?

Weber does not recommend a hose or pressure washer: water can get in and damage the ignition and other electronic parts.

Can I soak grill grates overnight?

No. Weber warns that overnight soaking can damage or corrode some materials.

Can grill grates go in the dishwasher?

Not Weber's grates, flavouriser bars or trays: wash them by hand with soap and warm water.

Can I use oven cleaner on a grill?

No. Weber lists oven cleaner, acid cleaners and abrasive pads among the products not to use.

Do baking soda and vinegar work on a grill?

They help with light cleaning, but Weber says they are less effective on burnt-on grease, and nothing should get into the burner ports.
