How to clean a laptop fan: switch off and unplug, short bursts of compressed air through the vents at a safe distance, no vacuums or air compressors, and when to stop

A laptop that runs hot, slows down under load or sounds like a hairdryer often has dust in the fan and heatsink. Clearing it is usually a five-minute job from the outside, but the wrong tool can break the fan blades or damage the electronics. This guide follows ASUS's official cleaning instructions and Dell's own laptop fan guide, and stays outside the case unless your manufacturer says otherwise.

Practical guide · Updated 2 November 2026

The essentials in 30 seconds

Turn the laptop off, unplug the charger and remove the battery if it is removable. Find the air vents: usually on the sides, but on some models they are hidden near the hinge. Blow short, controlled bursts of compressed air through the vents, keeping a proper distance: ASUS warns that strong air from close range can damage the fan blades. Do not use air compressors or other strong-airflow tools, and avoid household vacuums, which Dell says can generate static that may damage the circuits. Wipe the outside of the vents with a barely damp cloth, never letting liquid get inside. If the laptop still overheats, contact the manufacturer's service centre rather than forcing the case open.

  • Dell suggests clearing dust every three to six months, more often with pets or dust.
  • Some fanless models must not be cleaned this way.
  • Laptops with a dust filter: a soft brush, no vacuum.
01 / Why

Why a dusty laptop fan causes overheating

ASUS explains that overheating is often caused by dust or hair blocking the fan and heatsink, and that cigarette smoke leaves an oily film on the blades that attracts more dust. With the vents blocked, the fan cannot get rid of the heat. Dell adds that the fan then has to work harder, which increases noise and drains the battery, and the processor slows itself down to avoid damage (thermal throttling).

02 / Step by step

How to clean a laptop fan without opening it

  1. 01

    Shut down

Turn the laptop off completely, not just to sleep.

  2. 02

    Disconnect

Unplug the charger and external devices; remove the battery if your model has a removable one.

  3. 03

    Find the vents

Usually on the sides; on some models (ASUS UX series, for example) they are at the hinge.

  4. 04

    Compressed air

Electronics-safe compressed air, in short, controlled bursts, through the intake and exhaust vents.

  5. 05

    Keep your distance

Do not hold the nozzle right against the vent.

  6. 06

    Wipe the outside

A slightly damp paper towel on the external vents and casing, never letting moisture inside.

  7. 07

    Let it rest

Make sure everything is dry before turning it back on.

03 / Tools

What to use and what to avoid

Laptop fan cleaning: tools
Tool Use it? Why
Compressed air for electronics Yes, in short bursts at a distance Removes loose dust through the vents (ASUS, Dell)
Slightly damp paper towel Outside only Wipes grime from the external vents and casing (Dell)
Soft brush Dust filters on models that have one ASUS method for its filter-equipped models
Air compressor or air booster No ASUS has observed it damaging laptop fans
Household vacuum No Static can damage circuits (Dell); ASUS says no vacuum on dust filters
Liquids sprayed into vents No Moisture must not reach the motherboard
Hair dryer No Heat can deform the laptop (ASUS)
04 / Exceptions

Laptops that need a different approach

  • Fanless models: ASUS notes that on some models (such as the T100 series) heat is dissipated by the case, without a fan or vents, so this cleaning method is not recommended.
  • Models with a dust filter: ASUS says to brush the filter gently with a soft brush and not use a vacuum cleaner.
  • Hidden vents: on some thin laptops the vents sit at the hinge rather than on the sides.
05 / Opening the laptop

When to clean the fan from inside

Dell describes cleaning the fan from inside only after the external method has failed and the laptop keeps overheating or the fan stays loud: remove the bottom cover with a precision screwdriver, keep track of each screw, blow short bursts across the fan blades and heatsink, and reassemble everything before powering on. ASUS, for dust-related overheating, recommends contacting its customer service centre. Check your own model's service documentation before unscrewing anything, and if in doubt, leave it to the manufacturer.

FAQ

Cleaning a laptop fan: frequently asked questions

Can I clean my laptop fan without opening the laptop?

Yes. Turn it off, unplug it and blow short bursts of compressed air through the vents from a safe distance. That is what Dell recommends for routine maintenance.

Can I use a vacuum cleaner on my laptop fan?

Dell advises against household vacuums because they can generate static that may damage the circuits.

Is an air compressor safe for cleaning a laptop?

No. ASUS has observed strong-airflow tools such as air boost compressors damaging laptop fans.

How often should I clean my laptop fan?

Dell suggests every three to six months, more often in homes with pets or a lot of dust.

My laptop still overheats after cleaning the vents. What now?

Contact the manufacturer's service centre, as ASUS recommends, especially if opening the laptop is not covered by your model's instructions.
